Director – Biswarup Biswas

Cast – Jeet, Koushani Mukherjee, Chiranjeet Chakraborty, Biswarup Biswas, Ambarish Bhattacharya

Overall Rating – 3/5

For a long time Jeet was trying to come up with a complete mainstream movie with some original content which will not be a remake. Baccha Shoshur is his first attempt towards that direction. The film has packed all the masalas of mainstream movie like comedy, drama, emotion and has intentionally avoided action to give a different image to Jeet.

The story begins with a young married couple Spandan (Jeet) and Jonaki (Koushani Mukherjee) who had eloped to marry against the wish of the bride’s father (Chiranjeet Chakraborty). Since then Spandan and Jonaki are not in touch with the parents. They have a kid Gutlu (Aman Mehra) who is yet to start talking properly. One day suddenly Spandan start hearing his son Gutlu talking in the voice of his father-in-law. Not only that Gutlu started doing mischievous things to make his life hell. Only Spandan can experience this weird things so he believes it is his father-in-law who is trying to torture him through his son. No one is ready to believe him not even his wife Jonaki. She thinks her husband is going through some psychological problem and needs treatment. It lands up Soandan in a mental asylum. Finally Spandan decides to face his father-in-law in stead getting scared from him to learn the objective of his weird behavior. Thus he comes to know about the problems his in-laws have to face in last few years. How Spandan resolves those problems that forms the rest of the story.

Although the film has been promoted as a comedy but it is actually an emotional drama with some social message about taking care of elderly people in family. We had seen movies on this topic since decades so to give it a fresh feel, writer Pavel has wrapped up it with some comedy in the first half. But the comedy portion is not properly connected with the rest of the story. As a result it looks like two different movies in the two halves. These two halves have been connected with a poorly written subplot revolving around Spandan’s stay in the asylum which serves no purpose to the main story other than adding length. There are lots of questions which come in our mind while watching the film but those questions have never been answered. One may wonder why Spandan took so long to decide that he should face his father-in-law. Also it is not clear why his father-in-law who desperately needs his help, was wasting time doing mischievous things to him. Apart from that one must agree the tone of the film is over dramatic in the second half, it is at par with daily soaps. So in spite of beginning with a fresh idea the screenplay is ultimately disappointing. We expect much better screenplay from Pavel.

Biswarup Sarkar has made a good directorial debut although much of his work is shadowed by Pavel. Even in the behind the scene footage in the end credit Pavel has been shown there acting as a pseudo director.

Jeet is an established action star but we all know he has good comic timing too. That side of his acting talent has been utilized very well here. Apart from his irritating wig in the flashback sequences he has looked impressive through out the film. Koushani Mukherjee has got a rare opportunity to do some serious acting but she is just okay in her part, not too impressive. Chiranjeet Chakraborty has done a good job in both comedy and emotional moments. Besides direction Biswarup Sarkar has acted really well as Jeet’s best friend. Ambarish Bhattacharya has got a rare chance to play a grey character here and he has shined in his limited screen time.

Supriyo Dutta’s cinematography is pleasant to the eyes. Songs are well composed and refreshing. The good thing is most of the songs appears in proper situation so never work as a speed breaker except for the Tagore song which appears before the climax.

On a whole Baccha Shoshur is a good mix of comedy and emotion along with a social message. It has some touching moments too but the overall impact is just average. A better written script could have created more impact.
