Trailer of the movie “Mahalaya”

For every Bengali, Mahalaya morning begins with Mahishasur Mardini. The feeling of Mahalaya and Durga Puja is incomplete without hearing this musical written by Baani Kumar, composed by Pankaj Mullick and recited by Birendra Krishna Bhadra. This combination of songs and sholkas was an instant hit among the listeners since 1931 when All India Radio Kolkata broadcast it for the first time. Since then many TV channels , digital media and music companies has came up with several alternatives but none of those could compete with the original Mahishasur Mardini. Even the stardom of the most popular actor Uttam Kumar had failed to beat it’s popularity. Many people from the younger generation of today may not be aware of this infamous incident from 1976, when AIR Kolkata tried with an alternative of Birendra Krishna Bhadra with the voice of Uttam Kumar. It turned into a disastrous experiment as the response of the listeners was extremely negative. Even a group of angry crowd had tried to attack AIR office too to show their protest. Finally AIR had to air the original version on the day of Shashthi. After that they never tried to experiment with the emotions of the listeners. This infamous incident of 1976 will now be told in big screen in the upcoming film aptly titled as  Mahalaya.
