Overall Rating – 3.5/5

For all of us Anjan Dutt is a musician first and then a filmmaker, it was his love for music which had bring him to movies. He was rarely commercially successful as a filmmaker but he kept making movies about his experience on different people from Kolkata and influence of music. Then came Byomkesh movies which gave him commercial success but took him away from his roots. With Aami Ashbo Phirey that old pre-byomkesh Anjan Dutt has made a comeback. Also it is a comeback of father son duo as Anjan and Neel Dutt as the core musical team with seven wonderful songs.

The basic concept of the film had came to Anjan Dutt after writing the title track which gives a message of positivity. From their he got an idea to make a movie about the positive influence of music on the life of the listeners. While watching the film it looks very clear that the whole script has been written around the concept. Almost all the major characters are dealing with unhappiness, depression, negativity, problems of daily life and then some songs written by some unknown man heals most of their problems with the lyrics that talks about hope. To establish the theme, the story and script has suffered the most. It talks about sensitive issues like broken marriages, wrong upbringing of children which affects their adulthood, also it talks about rape and societies point of view about the causes of rape. But it never goes deep to address any of these issues. Anjan Dutt was a never a master in story telling rather he focus more on characters. The characters who are not completely positive or negative but with them one can identify easily. Aami Ashbo Phirey is not an exception. Here one can see a bunch of characters who are struggling with personal problems. There is a lonely self centered man Ranjan (Anjan Dutt), his separated wife (Anjana Basu) who is in between a broken marriage and family from past and a hopeful future ahead with her boyfriend and live in partner (Suprobhat). Then there is a rape victim Ranjana (Darshana Banik) who is struggling hard to come out of the stigma, her father (Sumanta Mukhopadhyay) and her boyfriend Arka (Anindya Chatterjee) who are with Ranjana but clueless about how to deal with her and society. Arka has his own problems too, he is not able to write good songs which is affecting his career as a musician and also making him poor financially. Also there is a lawyer Gargi (Swastika Mukherjee) who is fighting the case of Ranjana but her client is not in a position to co-operate with her. Outside court room she is fighting another battle in her own house too. Her young daughter Oona (Sauraseni Maitra) does not like her as a mother and wants to marry a much older guy Jojo (Kaushik Sen) who had an affair with Gargi once. None of these character has been given too much details or screen time but one can easily connect with them as their problems are very much common with everyone’s daily life. Also these characters works because of the extremely talented actors playing them.

The whole ensmble cast has done a fantastic job. Anjan Dutt and Swastika Mukherjee has done similar characters earlier too but their natural performances have created magic. Anjana Basu is very effective. Sauraseni Maitra has a charming screen presense. Darshana Banik and Anindya Chatterjee are good in their limited scope. Suprobhat is very talented and a wonderful discovery by Anjan Dutt. Kaushik Sen has very little to do. There is a wonderful cameo by Srijit Mukherji that deserves applause.

Undoubtedly music is the lifeline of the film. Some songs are situational, some pops up just randomly but all the songs works because of the wonderful lyrics by Anjan Dutt and superb composition by Neel Dutt.

On a whole Aami Ashbo Phirey is a musical that talks about the healing power of music. Maybe it’s not that easy as shown in the happy ending of the film but still it’s true to some extent. In today’s world where there is so much negativity around us this songs talks about hope and positivity. That is the need of the hour.
