Srijit Mukherji announced the final cast of his new film Shah Jahan Regency
Few months ago Srijit Mukherji had announced, he is going to turn producer with a modern day adaptation of the best seller “Chowranghee” written by Shankar. It will be the first film to be produced under Srijit Mukherji’s home production Matchcut Productions Private Limited. Srijit’s old partner Shree Venkatesh Films will also be there with the film as a co-producer.
Few months back when the film was announced it was tentatively titled as Chowranghee, now the final title has been decided as Shah Jahan Regency. Not only the title, there has been a big change in the cast also. Two actors Prosenjit Chatterjee and Jisshu Sengupta who are considered as very close to director Srijit Mukherji, were supposed to be a part of the film but they have excused themselves from the project. Prosenjit Chatterjee finds himself too old for the character and Jisshu Sengupta has to back out for his surgery. Jaya Ahsan was also supposed to be a part of the film but her name is not there in the final list. In such a situation Srijit has came up with a fresh casting which includes many actors with whom he is working after a long time. These names are Abir Chatterjee, Parambrata Chatterjee, Swastika Mukherjee and Rituparna Sengupta. All these actors are working with Srijit Mukherji after a long gap. Abir Chatterjee is a part of the film from the beginning but now it has been expected that he is going to play the character what Prosenjit Chatterjee was supposed to do. Most probably Parambrata will play the character for which Abir’s name was considered earlier. Swastika Mukherjee will work with Srijit after a long gap, last time they had worked together in Jaatiswar almost four years ago. Rituparna Sengupta will join hands with Srijit for second time but unlike their last film together, Begum Jaan, here Rituparna will not play the central character. She will be seen in a extended cameo which will be very significant to the story. Anjan Dutt, Rudranil Ghosh and Anirban Bhattacharya who were there in Srijit’s last film Uma and also there in his next release Ek Je Chhilo Raja will be seen in Shah Jahan Regency too. Babul Supriyo who has surprised everyone with his cameo in Uma will be a part of this film too. Veteran actress Mamata Shankar will also be there playing a significant character. Apart from them there will be Rittika Sen and Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee (last seen as Rituparna Sengupta’s husband in Belasheshe) will work for the first time with director Srijit Mukherji in this film.
Chowranghee was written in 1962 and few years later a film was also made based on the novel where Uttam Kumar had played the central character. According to Srijit, a lot has changed in hotel industry as well as in society in last 50 years so it is unnecessary to draw comparisons with the novel or the film. Shah Jahan Regency will not be a remake rather it will be a modern day story taking inspiration from the novel. Some characters from the original has been excluded whereas few new characters have been added. Also the names of some of the characters has been changed as those names are outdated now. Director Mukherji is also tight-lipped about who is going to play which character. May be he is keeping it secret to avoid unwanted comparisons. The makers want to approach it as a fresh film not as a remake. Most probably this is the reason for changing the title too. Shooting for the film will begin from the mid of July. Nothing has been confirmed about the release date so far.
