Birendra Krishna Bhadra’s Mahalaya rendition now on big screen
For every Bengali, Mahalaya morning begins with hearing Mahishasur Mardini in the voice of Birendrakrishna Bhadra. The feeling of Mahalaya and Durga Puja is incomplete without hearing this musical written by Baani Kumar, composed by Pankaj and recited by Birendra Krishna Bhadra. This combination of songs and sholkas was an instant hit among the listeners since 1931 when All India Radio Kolkata broadcasted it for the first time. Since then many TV channels , digital media and music companies has came up with several alternatives but none of those could compete with the original Mahishasur Mardini. Even the stardom of the most popular actor Uttam Kumar had failed to beat it’s popularity. Many of of young generation of today may not be aware of this infamous incident from 1976, when AIR Kolkata tried with an alternative of Birendra Krishna Bhadra with the voice of Uttam Kumar. It turned into a disastourd experiment as the response of the listeners was extremely negative. Even a group of angry crowd has tried to attack AIR office too to show their protest. Finally AIR had aired the original version on the day of Shashthi. After that they never tried to experiment with the emotions of the listeners. This infamous incident of 1976 will now be told in big screen in the upcoming film aptly titled as Mahalaya.
The film will be directed by Soumik Sen who will make his first Bengali film. Earlier he had made the film Gulaab Gang featuring Madhuri Dixit. Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee will produce the film under his production house nideas cretaions. Jisshu Sengupta will be seen playing Uttam Kumar and Birendra Krishna Bhadra will be played by Shubhashis Mukhopadhyay. Also actor Shubhomoy Chatterjee will be seen as Pankaj Mallick. Apart from them there will be Rudranil Ghosh, Kanchan Mallick and Saptarshi Roy in other characters. Prosenjit Chatterjee will also act in a small but significant character.
To avoid any kind of controversy, the production house has already taken consent from the families of Uttam Kumar, Birendra Krishna Bhadra and Pankaj Mallick. Shooting for the film has already started from this month.
