Aparna Sen to make a contemporary adaptation of Tagore’s Ghware Bairey

In 1984, Satyajit Ray had made love triangle Ghare Baire adopting Rabindranath Tagore’s Ghare Baire. Now after 34 years Director Aparna Sen is all set to retold the story of Nikhilesh, Bimala and Sandip in a modern day adaptation titled as Ghware Bairey Aaj. The film will be produced by Shree Venkatesh Films.

The original story was set in pre-independent India in the time of Bengal’s partition and Ray had also maintained the same timeframe but Aparna Sen has shifted the story to current time. The story will be set in the backdrop of current turbulent political scenario as a result there will be some necessary changes from the original story keeping the basic emotions intact. Most of us already know the story has three central characters Nikhilesh, his wife Bimala and his revolutionist friend Sandip. Sandip has a contradictory nature compared to Nikhilesh, he is more radical and active and Bimala gets easily attracted towards him for this. It leads to an extra marital love triangle.

In Ray’s version Victor Banerjee, Soumitra Chatterjee and Swatilekha Sengupta were seen in the lead. In Aparna Sen’s Ghware Bairey Aaj, Nikhilesh will be seen as the editor of an online news website with a progressive outlook. This character will be played by Anirban Bhattacharya. His wife is Brinda (Bimala’ name has been changed), a young dalit girl. Actress Tuhina Das who has appeared for brief appearances in few films so far will play her first central lead with this character. Jisshu Sengupta will be seen playing Sandip who will be seen as a nationalist leader in his 40’s. Earlier in his 20’s he was leftist student leader.

Apart from the trio there will be Anjan Dutt playing Mashtormashai, the teacher of Nikhilesh and Sandip. Veteran actor Manoj Mitra had played this character in Ray’s version. Also actress Sreenanda Shankar will play a pivotal part in the film.

Shooting for the film will begin from September at various locations of Kolakata and Bolepur.
